Who was Samuel in the Bible? Learn about the story of Samuel, the prophet, in this video.

Prophet Samuel, son of Elkanah and Hannah, was born during a tumultuous period for Israel, oppressed by the Philistines and in spiritual decline. Hannah, long barren, pleaded with God for a child, promising to dedicate him to the Lord's service. God heard her and gave her Samuel, and later five other children. Prophet Samuel was raised at the Tabernacle under the guidance of Priest Eli, and from a young age, he had divine visions. He prophesied the destruction of Eli's house, which came to pass when the Ark of the Covenant was seized by the Philistines.

Prophet Samuel led Israel to victory against the Philistines at Mizpah and erected a memorial, Eben-ezer, marking God's aid in their transition from defeat to victory. Samuel's sons, in contrast to their father, were corrupt and took bribes, leading the people to demand a monarchy. Samuel warned them of the price of their impatience, but with God's approval, he anointed Saul, a charismatic and brave man, as Israel's first king.

Saul's disobedience led to his rejection, and God directed Samuel to Jesse's house, where he anointed David as the new king. Prophet Samuel, recognized as a divine authority, presided over the prophets in Ramah, and his death was mourned greatly. Despite dying before David officially took the throne, Samuel's legacy as the last judge, the first in a prophetic tradition, and the one who anointed the first kings, was significant.
