The brilliant Jonathan Leathwood joins the show for the first time to discuss a much-neglected topic in classical guitar pedagogy: improvisation. We discuss step-by-step how Professor Leathwood cultivates this essential skill, including providing some fine demonstrations live on the show. In addition to this, we touch on a wide range of related topics including music theory, sightreading, repertoire, and more.

Professor Leathwood holds a Ph.D. in Music Analysis and Guitar Performance (University of Surrey) in 2010. He currently teaches at the Lamont School of Music, University of Denver as a Teaching Professor of Guitar & Music Theory. His last London concert led Classical Guitar to call him “a genius”; the Musical Times of London has written of his “remarkable talent and singular artistry,” while Fabio Zanon wrote in Violão Intercambio that “he has to be seen to be believed.”

He is the author of the 2024 book “Guitar” from the Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides series along with Richard Wright. (London, Kahn & Averill)
