First of all decide what type of decking board you want to use and what side are you are going to have up on your decking boards. Are you a ripple side up type of guy or do you prefer the flat side facing up. Personally l prefer the flat side facing up for reasons you will see in the video. As far as type of decking board, l prefer to use merbeau.

Secondly, have a look at what nails you are going to use. There are many varieties out there but go for a "deck" specific nail to avoid any issues down the track.

Thirdly, consider what type of timber you are going to use for the sub floor (joists, bearers, stumps etc). In my case l use treated pine which is termite resistant and suitable for outside use.
