Marriage has a prominent place in Indian society. In Indian society, marriage is not only a personal matter, but also an important social and cultural event. On one hand, while marriage is considered the most important of the sixteen sacraments, on the other hand, it is also linked to the prestige of people in Indian society. And in the pursuit of this ostentatious prestige, every person tries to spend as much as possible on the wedding ceremony. According to a report recently released by investment banking and capital market firm Jefferies, Indians spend almost twice as much on marriage as compared to education. According to this, the value of the Indian wedding industry is $130 billion i.e. about Rs 10.7 lakh crore. The report states that on an average, about $15,000 i.e. about Rs 12.5 lakh is spent on an Indian wedding, which is almost double the amount spent on education from preschool to graduation.


भारतीय समाज में विवाह का एक प्रमुख स्थान है. भारतीय समाज में विवाह केवल एक व्यक्तिगत मामला नहीं है, बल्कि एक महत्वपूर्ण सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक आयोजन भी है। एक ओर जहाँ विवाह को सोलह संस्कारों में से सबसे महत्वपूर्ण संस्कार माना जाता है, वहीं दूसरी ओर भारतीय समाज में इसे लोगों की प्रतिष्ठा से भी जोड़कर देखा जाता है. और इसी दिखावटी प्रतिष्ठा के चक्कर में हर व्यक्ति विवाह समारोह में अधिक से अधिक खर्च करने का प्रयास करता है. हाल ही में निवेश बैंकिंग और पूंजी बाजार फर्म जेफरीज द्वारा जारी हुई रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, भारतीय शिक्षा की तुलना में विवाह पर लगभग दोगुना खर्च करते हैं। इसके अनुसार भारतीय विवाह उद्योग का मूल्य 130 बिलियन डॉलर यानी लगभग 10.7 लाख करोड़ रुपये है। रिपोर्ट में बताया गया है कि औसत एक भारतीय विवाह पर लगभग 15,000 डॉलर यानी लगभग 12.5 लाख रुपये का खर्च होता है, जो प्रीस्कूल से लेकर स्नातक तक की शिक्षा पर खर्च की गई राशि का लगभग दोगुना है।
