Russia's Putin attends Orthodox Easter Mass

President Vladimir Putin attended Easter mass lead by Patriarch Kirill overnight on Saturday (May 1) through Sunday (May 2) at Russia's main Christ the Saviour Cathedral in central Moscow.

Last year the president did not attend the Easter service.

Easter is Christianity's most important holiday, symbolising the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Orthodox world marks Easter this year four weeks later than Catholic and Protestant Churches.

On Saturday night, orthodox churches and cathedrals around the world ushered in Easter with solemn ceremonies.

Easter celebrations culminated in a grand midnight procession with crosses and icons, and worshipers chanting "Christ is risen indeed".

During the ceremony, the head of Russia's Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill wished everyone liberation from coronavirus infection as well as from spiritual diseases.
