My Top 5 Food in Paihia New Zealand

A small historic town in Bay of Island called Paihia is by far my favourite place in New Zealand. Though a bit far, it is worth the travel. If you do not know how to drive, it is the place to be since you could just easily join tours. I will include here some of things I did just in case you would want to try them as well.

The place, people and food give the town quaint character. I am not the type of person who talks much but it was so easy to strike a conversation with the locals. Watch my short video to have a glimpse on my travel to the Winterless North.

I must have gained a few pounds during my stay there due to constant eating! Haha! :)
It is quite difficult to select on my top 5 food so I included other restaurants that I enjoyed.
You will surely have a happy tummy during your stay in Paihia! The nearby Russel offers so much as well.

Here are my favourite:

5. Craft Bar & Kitchen (00:58)
The location is right at the centre of Paihia. I enjoyed cooking the steak in a stone grill but maybe I will try the already cook one next time. It is served with potato salad and coleslaw on the sided which is more than enough for my tummy.

4. Vinnies Takeaways (02:00)
I was able to meet the owner during his last day on the store. He was very friendly to the customers. I enjoyed the crispy fish with a selection of dip. The fried scallops were equally yum. You can have a delicious dinner at a good price. I am not sure what the shop is called now since the new owner is planning to change the name. He mentioned what it might be but I kind of forgot. Poor memory. Haha! Does anyone know what this place is called now? Hopefully the food remains the same or even better.

3. Pizza Shack (04:02)
The stone oven baked calzone won my taste buds. I am happy to eat just the crust alone. Haha! Unfortunately, I was not able to try any other item on the menu or their breakfast meal. Have you? How was it?

2. King Wah Restaurant (06:28)
Oh boy, I definitely relate to Ben’s (Junior Masterchef constestant) fascination of bao bun. I can imagine his face when he described his first encounter of this food. I had my first taste here of a pork bao bun and it is amazing! Both the crispy pork and roast pork filling are worth a try. It is that good, satisfying on the tummy as well.

1. Third Wheel Coffee Co. (09:11)
A cafe tucked in a corner that you should not miss during your visit in the area. Aside from the food being amazing, the ambiance of the place is definitely charming. Let me know if you find this cafe amazing as well. What is your favourite in their menu? If you are planning on visiting Paihia, make sure to visit this hidden gem.

Second Hand Books (01:14)
Located beside the library is a stall which sells cheap second hand books. You could buy a read for a dollar or $4 dollars for newish ones. If you are looking for something to read during your stay, this is a good place to start. The good thing is, all proceeds goes to community projects.

Waitangi Treaty Ground (02:31)
If you want to understand more about the beginnings of New Zealand, Waitangi Treaty Ground is worth a visit. Make sure to join the educational tour and watch the cultural show, it will make you appreciate New Zealand’s’ history. They have a cafe on site which was unfortunately close already during my visit.

Barefoot Sailing Adventures (04:56)
I most definitely enjoyed my first try at sailing going to a nearby island in Paihia. Quietly cruise your way to the island in the most chill and relaxing way. With a maximum of 16 passengers, it is a good way to escape the crowd while lying in your bean bag.

Russel (07:03)
I was not able to explore the food scene here but there are plenty of options. The restaurants are located on historical buildings so it will add up to the experience. One building that we have visited is the Pompallier Mission & Printery. They will show and explain how they have printed books in the 19th century. You can have a go with it as well. They have a cafe on site if you did not have time to grab breakfast.
