The Australian Crested Pigeon is yet another incredible Australian Bird. A common sight in many areas of the country, this bird is as much a part of Australia as the Kookaburra or Magpie. Learn about one of its amazing features in this video.

Birdwatch World does not support the feeding of wild birds. You may think that you are helping them by feeding them but the fact is, you are literally killing them with kindness. Read this article on the Birdwatch World blog to learn about the dangers of feeding bread to birds https://birdwatchworld.com/can-birds-...

For more information about feeding wild birds, please read this article from Wires https://www.wires.org.au/wildlife-inf...

Crested pigeons are one of the 353 species in the Columbidae family which includes pigeons and doves.

This is one of the rare species that has benefited from living alongside humans. Due to the clearing of coastal forests, the crested pigeon has been able to expand its habitat across most of the country. Initially, it was confined to sparsely wooded grasslands within arid and semi-arid areas, but can now be found in agricultural and urban areas. Furthermore, creating watering points for livestock has facilitated its expansion into even drier environments. Today, crested pigeons can be seen across Australia, with the exception of the extremely arid and treeless desert areas and the densest forested regions.

They are mostly light grey with a dark grey to black crest. Brownish on their backs and rumps with white tips on their wing feathers. Their stand-out feature is their stunning colourful wing patches. When viewed from the right angle, these feathers reflect iridescent green, bronze, or purple, adding a splash of brilliant colour to an otherwise fairly plain bird.

Crested pigeons eat mostly seeds and leaves. Up to 10% of their diet is insects and invertebrates. They feed on the ground in small flocks of around 5-6 birds. It is common to see them in public parks and gardens, eating around picnic tables and bench seats. In these cases, they are most likely consuming scraps people leave behind after eating.

The crested pigeon is another beautiful Australian bird and one that I think will be living alongside us for many years to come.
