'ever start a sentence with ‘and’. It’s one of the most well-known grammar rules there is. But guess what? It’s also wrong!

When your school teacher told you this, she was being helpful. Because it’s great advice if you’re writing a formal piece, like an essay.

But if you’re writing an email, a report, a blog post or any other business document, it’s perfectly OK to start a sentence with “and” - as well as similar words like “but” and “because”.

The reason? Doing so will automatically make your sentences shorter, friendlier and easier to read.

So be bold - and feel free to break the old-fashioned rule about never starting your sentences with ‘and’.
