Paintings At Lakshmi Narayan Temple l Orchha l Madhya Pradesh l India

Orchha : A city in Madhya Pradesh situated on the banks of Betwa river and characterized by Bundeli architecture.

The city of Orchha is full of the Betwa river which is a tributary of the Yamuna, Orchha fort, Chaturbhuj Temple with the tallest gopuram among the Hindu temples in India, the famous Ram Raja Temple, mausoleums of Bundeli kings and other small - big monuments. In the 16th century, Bundela chieftain Rudra Pratap Singh founded Orchha and became its first king. He also created many structures in the city.

Another major attraction in Orchha is the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. Standing on a small hill just a few minutes away from the Orchha fort, this ancient temple is famous for two main reasons.

The first reason is the design of this temple. The temple is built in the shape of an owl which is the vehicle of Goddess Lakshmi. Above the entrance of the temple, an owl carved in stone is clearly visible.

And another reason is the wall paintings here. The various paintings painted on the inner wall and ceilings of the temple from 17th to 19th century are very eye - catching. One can also see good depictions of Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagvad Gita and other mythological stories, the then rulers and some events in their lives, their daily activities and India during the British period, various regimes, their war events.
