Kelso - 1960 Jockey Club Gold Cup

No one could have known what was to come over the next few years, but three-year-old Kelso had already done enough to warrant favoritism in the 1960 Jockey Club Gold Cup. The gelding had won all but one of his nine starts that year and he’d done so in style. He ran the fastest mile by a sophomore to that point in New York history, tied a track record held by the legendary Man o’ War, and entered the race off of his first win over elders. With jockey Eddie Arcaro aboard, Kelso set an American track record of 3:19 2/5 for the two mile distance. It was the ninth win in the historic race for Arcaro and sealed champion three-year-old and Horse of the Year for Kelso.
