Racegoers flocked to Sandown in the hope of seeing something special, and they were not disappointed as Mill Reef followed up his Epsom Derby triumph in record time.

Ian Balding’s superstar brushed aside his elders in some style under Geoff Lewis, storming home by four lengths from French ace Caro, with another top older horse, Welsh Pageant, two and a half lengths away in third. He would go on to win the King George and the Arc later in the season.
