At some point you have to build up as well as out. Statesmen are needed to get past the inefficiency bonus that afflicts large colonies. Statesmen can only be trained at universities, but universities need a population of 10 to build, which means I need(or at least, want) a high rebel percentage, which needs statesmen... so I just bought some, at the painful price point of 1900 gold each.

In addition to colony efficiency, another benefit of cranking out all those liberty bells is I get more Founding Fathers. Hernan Cortes in particular makes a war against the Indians self-financing; perhaps even profitable. Indian villages are best attacked from an adjacent colony, since that results in the gigantic "Artillery Vs Raid" bonus when they try to fight back. I even perpetrate the ridiculously dirty trick of building a temporary colony purely for that purpose.

(This, incidentally, is why I don't think Spain is a particularly good faction. Attacking villages with artillery vastly favours the attacker, even without the Spanish war crime bonus. I suspect 1492's combat resolution mechanic is partly to blame here; massively outmatched defenders seem less likely to win than they are under Col's janky RNG. Perhaps Spain needs a buff, like getting more converts from destroyed villages.)

I eventually "win" the war - destroying the capital resets a tribe's hostility, so I can go back to trading with them now. Be advised that only the first war is cheap - the price of artillery and muskets shot up into the stratosphere thanks to the surge in demand... so it's probably time to start making muskets for sale now.

The English took the opportunity to grab one of my colonies while I was distracted with the Indians. I got it back, but I don't consider the matter settled. My retaliation will occur at times and places of my own choosing.

Founding Fathers - 4 this time:

Peter Minuit - Indian land is automatically "bought" for free. This can actually hurt you; land is taken as soon as a colony could use it, even if you're not using it, which results in a lot of unnecessary Indian alarm, and the concomitant shakedowns, raids, and random killing of colonists.
Hernan Cortes - Fabulous prizes can now be won by destroying Indian villages, and the king no longer charges a 50% fee to teleport them back to Europe. He'll still tax them, of course. This applies to all treasure, not just that obtained from conquest (see 1:52:09)
William Penn - Cross production increased by 50%. I wouldn't normally bother with him so early, but the unusually large number of Firebrand Preachers showing up on the docks makes me care about crosses. (Also there weren't any standout alternative choices)
Pocahontas - Resets Indian alarm, and cuts further alarm generation by 50%. Good for cooperation, or - from a more cynical point of view - good for getting back to the "pretending to be nice" period between two wars.
