⭐ Brief History
Reports are that early morning on 5 January 1978, a covert operation allegedly carried out by special forces in the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), in which five Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporters were shot dead after being lured into an ambush at the Green Bay Firing Range by JDF members of the Military Intelligence Unit (MIU)

The victims all hailed from Downtown Kingston. in areas of Higholborn Street and Gold Street, which is the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) stronghold of South Side community.

The men were said to have been too closely linked to the opposition JLP and were pointed out as being prime targets for assassination by members of the Peoples National Party PNP (headed then by the now deceased Michael Manley).

The Military Intelligence Unit was tasked by government members to take "all reasonable steps" to either overtly or covertly remove anyone who was seen as a threat to the island's security and to the smooth running of the PNP government.

The mission was carried out by undercover agents of the JDF MIU going into the Southside Community and infiltrating the "POW Posse"

The POW Posse was a local gang operating in the area led by the now assassinated Franklyn Allen aka "Chubby Dread".

The targets for assassination amounted to 14 men

So, the 14 men were promised guns and jobs in the military if they co-operated with the Government, and needing the guns and money they agreed

On 5 January 1978 they were picked up at the intersection of Higholborn Street and Port Royal Street and driven to the Green Bay artillery range.

On arrival at the Military Base, the men were escorted out and told not to move as they would be picked up by other persons who would take care of requirements and supply them with arms.

When the MIU operatives drove off, a team of JDF snipers lying in ambush in the nearby hills, led by Major Ian Robinson, armed with L2A2 Self Loading Rifles (SLR), L8 General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), Sterling Sub-Machine Guns (SMG) and Browning 9mm pistols.

On the receipt of a signal, the JDF snipers opened fire on the men.

5 men fell dead under the raining gunfire and the remainder fled into nearby bushes/cactuses.

One member is known to have survived and his name is Delroy Griffiths.

Mr Griffiths escaped to the bay and was rescued by a passing fishing boat.

The JDF account of the incident in an official report, said the men were shot dead after they were surprised by soldiers doing target practice at the Green Bay Firing Range.
