Detritus and Mulm are commonly misunderstood in the aquarium hobby with quite a lot of myths regarding what they are and their purpose. What is their purpose in a natural or scientific aquarium? Are they needed for the feeding of aquarium fishes?

This is useful to discuss for freshwater biologists particularly those interested in Loricariids and discus.
