Chuiya Ma Hah is a ‘Dhaan Naach Geet’ and heralds the arrival of the harvesting season (Mangsir) and is sung whilst performing the ‘Dhaan Naach’ to celebrate the separation of grains from the harvest, which is called ‘Daain’ pronounced ‘Baain’ as in bangles.

Men and women form circles or line up on opposite sides facing each other and dance back and forth to the rhythm of the song, their stamping feet separating grain from the chaff.

It is a ritual people observe to celebrate abundance and also as an occasion to courting of young couples! Very often, the dance lasts for days and the song itself reflects a light-hearted vibe as the young damsels teasingly make demands on their young admirers.

Our Grandfather (Mummy’s Guru), Late Singman Singh Waiba used to fondly boast about how he did the Dhann Naach for days to an end and how none of the lads could ever keep up! (With us, he never spoke of the hearts he broke if any).

Chuiya Ma Hah was written and composed by him many years ago, perhaps when Mummy was still in her teens and we would like to present this song as a tribute to our spirited Grandfather and Mother the Late Hira Devi Waiba.
