Bailey's Giraffe Calf Update Oct. 19, 2020

Join giraffe keepers, Amy and Kayla, for an update on our 3-week-old giraffe calf! Although she's been exploring the big yard lately, today the calf decided to stay in the barn, so we met her there.

The baby has not yet been named. We typically name giraffe calves around 30 days after they're born. The little girl and first-time mom, Bailey, have bonded well and baby has been nursing regularly since she was born. The calf has started to get curious about enrichment, the big yard, and fellow members of her herd. Keepers say the calf and 2-year-old male, Ohe, and 22-year-old female, Muziki, seem to be forming special bonds. You'll be able to see her with the herd outside on days when it's about 50 degrees or warmer.

Today at 4:45 p.m. MT, the temporary indoor giraffe cam, which many of you have been watching for the last five weeks, will be switched off permanently. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the live birth and followed along for this baby's first three weeks of life! We'll continue bringing you social media updates on the calf and the herd! You can also tune in to our live outdoor giraffe cams every day between 8:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. at cmzoo.org/giraffecam.
