NCCIH Webinar - Métis History and Identity Presentation with Dr. Macdougall

To begin, Métis historian Dr. Brenda Macdougall, will overview the historical context in which the Métis Nation was born. She will explain how over a short period of time, Métis people developed a distinct society, with its own particular cultural, economic, and social orientation. As part of this historical overview, Dr. Macdougall will examine the path that the Métis followed throughout the nineteenth century to assert their rights and interests as a separate people. Though relatively new as a distinct people, the influence of Métis people has profoundly impacted how we understand Aboriginal and Canadian history. Knowing one’s identity and history will be shown as critical to individual well-being and as an indicator of a strong and healthy nation.

Webinaire du CCNSA – Se connaître soi-même : Histoire et identité des Métis et la nation métisse aujourd'hui

Brenda Macdougall, historienne des Métis, commencera par fournir une vue d’ensemble du contexte historique de la naissance de la nation métisse. Elle expliquera comment, en peu de temps, les Métis ont développé une société distincte, avec sa propre orientation culturelle, économique et sociale. Dans le cadre de cet aperçu historique, Mme Macdougall examinera le chemin parcouru par les Métis tout au long du XIXe siècle pour faire valoir leurs droits et leurs intérêts en tant que peuple distinct. Bien que cette identité distincte soit relativement récente, l’influence des Métis a profondément marqué la façon dont nous comprenons l’histoire autochtone et canadienne. Mme Macdougall établira la vitalité de la connaissance de son identité et de son histoire pour le bien-être individuel et comme indicateur d’une nation forte et saine.
