Airtel and Jio are facing new challenges after the Indian government approved Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service. Starlink uses satellites to provide high-speed internet, even in remote areas where regular mobile networks can’t reach. This makes it a strong competitor, especially in rural parts of India.

Jio and Airtel had asked the government to auction satellite spectrum, just like 5G spectrum. They believed everyone should pay the same way to keep things fair. But the government chose to give Starlink and other satellite companies the spectrum through direct allocation, not auctions. This allowed Starlink to enter the market faster and with fewer costs.

Now, Jio and Airtel are worried. They have spent billions on building towers and buying spectrum for their 4G and 5G services. Starlink, on the other hand, pays only a small 4% fee on its revenue, which is much less than what Indian telecom companies pay. Airtel and Jio say this is unfair and could hurt their business.

Even though they see Starlink as a competitor, both Airtel and Jio have also signed deals to work with it in some areas. Still, they are asking the government to rethink the rules so all players follow the same system.

The situation shows how quickly technology is changing the internet market in India.
