How textile industry has depleted Satluj | Water pollution | ਬੁੱਢਾ ਨਾਲਾ

This is what a Textile industry does to fresh water sources, forest and people who are dependant on them. Walipur is a living example

Satluj’s water is considered of drinking quality and it is classified as C category by Punjab Pollution Control Board. Buddha Naala meets the Satluj river close to Walipur Kalan village of Punjab’s Ludhiana district. It carries polluted water of Ludhiana’s industry along with it. After the water from Buddha Naala merges with Satluj, it becomes undrinkable and the quality classification is considered E category.

The residents of villages along its course bear the brunt of this water pollution. We talked to residents of Walipur Kalan, who are suffering consequences of polluted groundwater. Majority of people in the village are facing health related issues. Some have died due to cancer, others are suffering from Skin, Kidney and Liver diseases. Children as young as 7 years, have grey hair and dental problems.

In April 2022, we met Dharampreet, a young man of 27 years. He told us how he became infected with Hepatitis due to water pollution in the village. A fortnight after the interview, in June 2022, he died.

A woman mentioned that she also suffered from Hepatitis and her family didn’t want her to take medicine. They wanted to keep it secret. People are scared of the disease and don’t want others to know because it becomes a hurdle in getting their children married. They are landless labourers and can’t afford to get the water filtered at home. Now they have to pay their hard earned income to buy clean drinking water. Most villagers want Buddha Naala to be cleaned. They want a strict ban on release of polluted water by the industry.

ਸਤਲੁਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਣਯੋਗ ਹੈ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਣ ਕੰਟਰੋਲ ਬੋਰਡ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੀ ਕੈਟੇਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜਾਬੰਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਲੁਧਿਆਣੇ ਜ਼ਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਲੀਪੁਰ ਕਲਾਂ ਨੇੜੇ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਲੁਧਿਆਣੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਫੈਕਟਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲਾ ਗੰਦ ਮੰਦ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਨਾਲ਼ਾ ਢੋਂਹਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਤਲੁਜ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਪੀਣਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਦਰਜਾਬੰਦੀ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਈ ਕੈਟੇਗਰੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਪਲੀਤ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਵਸਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਸੀਂ ਵਲੀਪੁਰ ਕਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਲਾ ਖਰਾਬ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹਨ। ਕੁਝ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਨਾਲ਼ ਮਰ ਵੀ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ, ਬਹੁਤ ਜਣੇ ਚਮੜੀ, ਗੁਰਦਿਆਂ, ਅਤੇ ਮਿਹਦੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ਼ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਹਨ। 6-7 ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਲ਼ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਦੰਦ ਖਰਾਬ ਹਨ।

ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ 2022 ਵਿਚ ਅਸੀਂ 27 ਸਾਲਾ ਗੱਭਰੂ ਧਰਮਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਾਲੇ ਪੀਲੀਏ ਨਾਲ਼ ਹੋਏ ਬੁਰੇ ਹਾਲ ਬਾਰੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ। ਉਸ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਿਹਾ। ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ ਤੋਂ ਡੇਢ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਚਲਾਣਾ ਕਰ ਗਿਆ।

ਇਕ ਔਰਤ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਕਾਲਾ ਪੀਲੀਆ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਲਵੇ। ਉਹ ਇਸ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਪਤ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਲੋਕ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਡਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗੇ। ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਖਬਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਅੜਚਣ ਬਣ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਬਹੁਤੇ ਲੋਕੀਂ ਬੇਜ਼ਮੀਨੇ ਕਿਰਤੀ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਫ਼ਿਲਟਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਵਾ ਸਕਦੇ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਖੂਨ-ਪਸੀਨੇ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਨਾਲ਼ ਪੀਣਯੋਗ ਪਾਣੀ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਲਈ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਰ ਹਨ।

ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਸੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ। ਉਹ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਫੈਕਟਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਛੱਡਣ ‘ਤੇ ਸਖਤ ਪਬੰਦੀ ਲੱਗੇ
