In Walipur Kalan ( Dist. Ludhiana, Punjab), the stinking, toxic, dark waters of polluted Buddha Nullah meet the comparatively cleaner waters of Sutlej river.

As per Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) monitoring data for Budha Nallah from April to June 2019, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) was recorded from 65 to 2,112 mg/l. It should not be more than 30 mg/l.

Entire population in Malwa region of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan is dependent on Satluj River as a source of drinking water and irrigation. In Punjab, Water Pollution is responsile for hundreds of deaths every year.
