THIS VIDEO: Gregory Halpern is a full member of Magnum and he teaches photography at the Rochester Institute of Photography. His work occupies a space that exists somewhere between documentary and lyricism. This is a difficult line to hold, but he’s developed a consistent aesthetic that communicates his experience of being in a particular space and interacting with the people he meets. Because the work seems, at first glance, unstructured, it’s easy to assume that there isn’t a - comprehensive thread - binding the pictures. Halpern says that he’s primarily motivated by the desire to “create” rather than to “document” and …What interests him about the world is its chaos and contradictions. He’s sceptical about the ability of photography to truthfully reflect or capture the world. Photographs are always filtered through the subjective view of the photographer.
