ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC Matches in Volleyball History !!! It was a thrilling full-set match between the #2 world-ranked powerhouse, Brazil, and the #7 underdogs, Japan. It was a long, hard-fought battle, and both teams displayed excellent world-class plays, but the scores of 25–23 | 25–21 | 18–15 | 22–25 | 18–16 gave Japan their 1st ever win against Brazil after 30-years in an FIVB tournament. A historic win for the Japanese as they struggled to win against a higher-ranked team in the league, and they remain undefeated with a tally of 7–0.
The 5th set started with Sekita entrusting his first toss to Miyaura, but Honorato went for a block for Brazil’s first point. Miyaura quickly redeems himself with a block back to Honorato for Japan’s first point at 1-all. It was a close game with both teams siding out, but 2 consecutive errors from Brazil gave Japan a break at 7–5. Alan took back 2 points for his team to tie the game again at 7-all then both teams kept the scores tied. Miyaura finally scored an ace at 13–11 but couldn’t continue through another one. Brazil made a double substitution with Bruno and Roque at 13–12. Miyaura gave his team the match point at 14–12 after attacking against three blockers. Japan gave away 2 points from their errors for a deuce at 14-all.
Ishikawa makes up for his error and gets Japan their 2nd match point at 15–14. Brazil saved a point via Flavio’s attack in the middle. Miyaura got match point again at 16–15, but Roque tied the game at 16-all. Sekita gave another toss to Miyaura, this time in Zone 4, for their 3rd match point at 17–16.
Ishikawa didn’t waste any opportunity and served heavily to Lucarelli, whose reception got them out of the system. Brazil couldn’t convert for a point but also managed to get Japan out of their system. Ishikawa entrusted a toss to Ran, who played the ball calmly and took a chance on a block out. Once again, giving his team the finishing point at 18–16.
Ran Takahashi was hailed as MVP of the Match with 21 points (19 attacks and 2 service aces). He played consistently throughout the game and contributed to the team’s offense and defense becoming only 2nd to Yamamoto in the digging department with 9 successful digs out of 13. Yuki Ishikawa scored the most for both teams with 27 points (25 attacks and 2 service aces).
STARTING SIX
Team Japan: Onodera (MB), Miyaura (OP), Yamauchi (MB), Sekita (S), Ran (OH), Ishikawa (OH) and Yamamoto (L)
Team Brazil: Bruno (S), Otávio (MB), Onorato (OH), Lucas (MB), Lucarelli (OH), Alan (OP) and Thales (L)
It was the most thrilling and entertaining match I watched from Japan. I expected that Japan might be ending their winning streak against Brazil instead, they won the game. They did amazingly well winning in the first two sets, and that’s already history for them. Game by game, they proved themselves worthy of a higher spot in the world rankings. How strong is their offense now? They had three hitters with scores over 20 points in the match. Ishikawa (27pts.), Miyaura (24pts.) and Ran (21pts.) It was the perfect balance of offense among the wing hitters, but that wouldn’t happen without the excellent setting of Masahiro Sekita, who currently ranked #1 after today’s match, beating Brazil’s Bruno and USA’s Christenson.
