"God bless you, my boy. I shall be ready for you tomorrow night." The last words of the first sad clown Joseph Grimaldi. He was found dead in his sleep after a night of drinking. He had retired from the stage as a result of ill health. The years of extreme physical exertion his clowning had involved had taken a toll on his joints. With his body nearly crippled, and his wife, Mary, having suffered a stroke days before the death of their alcoholic and troubled son, they made a self-deletion pact. However, they abandoned the idea as the poison they took only resulted in a long bout of stomach cramps. After Mary died, Grimaldi spent the last few years of his life alone and depressed and an alcoholic. One evening he felt a tightening in the chest but recuperated enough to attend his local tavern, where he spent a jovial evening entertaining fellow patrons and drinking to excess. Because he had lost the use of his lower extremities, he was carried to and from the tavern by its proprietor. That night after being carried home, he told the poor, helpful soul:
