Jeep Cherokee: Intake Manifold Removal & Install/ Gasket Replacement 1999-2006 4.0L ['99-'01 XJ]

The Intake Manifold on the Jeep 4.0L is generally the same between all models including the Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee WJ and Wrangler TJ from 1999 to 2006. This newer, redesigned manifold, often nicknamed the horseshoe style intake, was introduced in model year 1999 as a higher flowing more efficient upgrade than the rectangular, boxy intake that preceded it.

The intake manifold mounts to the cylinder head by 8 bolts with a gasket separating them. In this video, I’ll be removing and replacing this gasket, as it’s causing a vacuum leak that generates an extremely loud high pitch screaming noise at warm idle. I traced this vacuum leak by process of elimination; after a thorough inspection of all the vacuum hoses and acutely listening around the engine bay for it, I determined the manifold gasket must be the culprit, and I was correct.
