Cappadocia's 'fairy chimneys' are a fascinating World Heritage Site located at Goreme. These chimneys are the result of a geologic process that began millions of years ago when volcanic eruptions rained ashes across what would eventually become Cappadocia and its surroundings. Few of these dwellings are believed to date back to 4000 BC. Today many of these cave dwellings and a few fairy-chimney churches have been converted into boutique hotels for tourists. But few of these ancient chimneys are also still inhabited by rural people.
