My husband learned how to harvest cassava. Cassava is one of the most important crops in the Philippines. It is the third most important source of calories in the tropics, after rice and corn.
Our neighbor, Angel, took us to their cassava farm. It was not far from our house. We showed my husband how to harvest manioc by digging. After a while, we decided to try a different approach and let Boria pull the cassava up. It was so much quicker and easier.
The next day, we took the cassava we had harvested to the spring water to clean it. We are going to make suman, a popular snack here in the Philippines. We need to grate the cassava, take banana leaves and prepare the young coconuts, coconut milk and condensed milk.
While we were making the suman, our neighbor Angel brought one of her puppies to our house. It was so cute and has blue eyes like my husband. We decided to adopt it.
After grating and mixing all the ingredients for the cassava suman, we wrap it with banana leaves. It was already evening when we finished wrapping. The last step is to steam the cassava. It was a long and difficult process, but when we tasted the fruit of our labor, it was all worth it. The cassava suman is so good.
