Every year around 40 000 people visit the island of Gotland in Sweden to experience Medeltidsveckan, the Medieval Week - Sweden's biggest historical festival. This year I decided to explore what there is to do during this massive festival!

In this video I compare Medieval Week with Renaissance Faires in the US and Europe, but most of all I explore what you can find at the festival. There's a huge Medieval market, and also Medieval pubs, Medieval exhibitions and performances, and plenty of jesters, musicians and people dressing up in more or less historically accurate clothes.

The festival is mostly centered around the town of Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the biggest town on Gotland. The most noticeable feature of the city is the Medieval wall circling the town, but there's plenty of other things to see. Most notably, hundreds of years old church ruins that are scattered throughout the city.

During the week there's a huge amount of performances taking place. From big, flashy stage performances with plently of historical information, to more ad hoc performances by smaller bands or troubadours, or jesters. And then there's also a lot of random street musicians all over the area.

I also talk about the parties and the Medieval pubs, as well as the huge jousting tournament featuring not only knights and archers, but also fire-breathing jesters and a lot more.

The Medieval Week is an enormous spectacle, and I hope that this video will make you want to attend it for yourself!
