Tony Buyalos was a sponsored skateboarder from California facing a dilemma: all of the hardware available was way too long for street skateboarding setups that didn’t have riser pads and other bulky pieces on it. So, along with his girlfriend April Hamrick and only 200 dollars, Tony started his company out of his own bedroom. Quickly, the company grew in a market where short hardware was hard to come by.

Later down the road, Tony met Chad Muska, and asked to help him in building the team and the brand. Chad had also had an offer from Flip skateboards, but decided to go with Shorty’s, because of the greater degree of creative control he would be given. Chad added guys like Steve Olsen, Sammy Baptista, Jessey Silve, Fabrizio santos, and others to the team. Other skateboarders, such as Torey Pudwill, had emerged from the Shorty’s team as well.

Together, they filmed the Shorty’s hardware video, Fulfill the Dream, Guilty, and How to Go Pro.

Shorty’s also had a snowboard team with well-known riders such as Devun Walsh, but this project only lasted one year before being put on the back burner.

Shorty’s Ads are synonomous with their poster girl, Rosa. Rosa had connected with Tony and April when she was 18, and became intertwined with Shorty’s marketing and image. Having appeared in Big Brother among other magazines, she had famous ads such as the Guaranteed for Life ad, the utopia ad, and another where she laid in a bath tub full of skateboard hardware.

It’s even interesting to note that the famous signer Matt Costa had a short stint on Shorty’s as an Am. He then moved on to music, and has since played alongside Jack Johnson, Oasis, Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie.

Tony Buyalos passed away in recent years, leaving behind an amazing legacy within the 90’s and early 2000’s era of skateboarding. Thank you Tony!
