Jaw cyst is a bag of skin which is inside the bone which is full of fluid. When you have a condition like a cyst, a cyst can actually expand and eat away the bone. It can be in the upper jaw or the lower jaw and it is usually associated with an infection associated with the tooth or it could be a developmental condition where the tooth is not developing and is stuck inside and the covering on the tooth which is stuck and it multiplies and starts forming a cyst. The issue is basically the cyst has to be removed because the cyst becomes bigger and bigger at the expense of your bone. So that is the reason why you have to do a simple surgical procedure to remove the entire cyst and when we take out the cyst we will have a huge cavity in the jaw bone and that is the reason why we have to put a graft inside. So we have a choice, taking out your own bone which can be form the hip or the rib or we can use a synthetic graft material which we can pack into the cyst cavity and that helps in regeneration of the bone the second condition common in the jaws is the jaw tumor. Jaw tumors are benign conditions and they are not cancerous and they unfortunately become very aggressive as they start eating away the bone and that is the reason why we have to resect the jaw and that is why the segment of the jaw is taken out and when part of the jaw is take out, it has to be reconstructed and the best option here is unlike cyst where we can use synthetic graft material, here we take your own bone and the bone which we commonly use is either your leg bone or hip bone or your rib bone. These bones can be used for reconstruction of the jaw and many at times when we remove teeth from the jaw, because of the fact the tumor was involved there we have to even put an implant into the reconstructed bone and thereby we can give you not only give you a normal shape but also regain the function and thereby replace what is lost here. So the whole form and function can be replaced. So jaw cysts and tumors are quite common and these are benign conditions and once we treat them, they do not reoccur and once we treat them. They get back to the normal form.
