Market Design - Establishing an Independent System Operator

This workshop is the second in a series of events dedicated to exploring the critical topic of Establishing an Independent System Operator. It is organized in collaboration with ZESCO, the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), and the Regional Energy Regulators Association of Southern Africa (RERA).

This workshop explores the following: defining the goals of a power market; understanding the existing market structures, contractual arrangements, and institutional frameworks; comprehending a phased approach to transition to a new market design to minimize disruption and ensure a smooth transition, including ring-fencing best practices; and delving into the institutional and organizational structure of the power market, including the rules, regulations, and institutions that govern the operation of the market.
