Dit is het verhaal van Laurens ten Dam.
Dit is een ode aan Unbound.

Unbound, de Elfstedentocht van het gravel. Maar ook: het WK van de onverharde paden. Officieus dan. Wie Unbound wint, is een hele meneer.
En dan Laurens. De man die symbool staat voor het herontdekte magische avontuur dat gravelen heet.

Willen winnen. Maar niet kunnen winnen. Dan niet meer weten waarom je wilde winnen. Althans, dat gold voor de periode vóórdat Laurens als profavonturier door het leven ging. Na een enorme carrière als wielerprof besloot de knecht toch nog alles uit de kast trekken en bleek een veelwinnaar te zijn in het gravelen. Maar wil hij eigenlijk wel winnen? En wat betekent dat winnen dan voor hem? Op 3 juni 2023 is het alles of niets. Maar waarom dat ‘moeten’ en ‘zullen’? Wat drijft hem? Waar komt zijn ijzersterke vastberadenheid en discipline vandaan?

Dit is een verhaal over het najagen van dromen, over het ontleden van het heilige, innerlijke vuur. Over jongensdromen, het beste uit jezelf halen, dag in dag uit. Dit is het verhaal van Laurens ten Dam. Dit is een ode aan Unbound.

This is the story of Laurens ten Dam.
This is an ode to Unbound.

Unbound, the biggest and most prestigious gravel race in the world. But also: the World Championships of the unpaved roads. Unofficially then. Whoever wins Unbound is quite a boss.
And then Laurens. The man who symbolizes the rediscovered magical adventure called gravel.

When you want to win, but you can't. And then you no longer know why you actually wanted to win. At least, that was the case before Laurens went through life as a professional adventurer. After an enormous career as a cycling professional, the servant decided to continue giving his all and turned out to be a winner in gravel. But does he really want to win? And what does winning mean to him? On June 3rd, 2023, it's all or nothing. But why the constant 'can' and 'will'? What drives him? Where does his determination and discipline come from?

This is a story about chasing dreams and analysing that sacred fire within. About boyhood dreams, getting the best out of yourself, day in and day out. This is the story of Laurens ten Dam. This is an ode to Unbound.
