The muscles in the back of your leg, your hamstrings, are often susceptible to tightness. This is mainly due to the amount of time that we spend sitting with our knees bent. This can cause an adaptive shortening in your hamstrings which can pull on your pelvis and cause discomfort in your legs, hips, and back.

Fortunately, there’s a lot that the right stretches and exercises can do to alleviate tightness in your hamstrings and minimize pain. In this video, you’ll learn six of the most effective techniques and stretches that you can do at home to relieve tension in your hamstrings.

I regularly give these exercises to my physical therapy patients to perform with great results achieved! I hope you get good relief from them, as well!

Your “hamstrings” are actually a group of three muscles that sit on the back of your leg. They connect on your “sits” bone on your pelvis, cross the hip joint, cross the knee joint, and attach into the front of the tibia. Because of this anatomy, your hamstrings not only bend your knee, but they also extend your hip. The best stretches for your hamstrings are those that include knee extension (straightening) AND hip flexion.

PREPARE YOUR HAMSTRINGS THE RIGHT WAY

In order to achieve maximum results from your stretching, we first need to prepare the muscle. This is best done through massage and myofascial release techniques. The simplest way to do this at home is with use of a foam roller or a softball/baseball/lacrosse ball.

How often should I stretch my hamstrings? (10:48)

I typically recommend performing the stretches 2-3x daily to achieve the best results. You will still see some improvement if you perform them once daily, however best outcomes will be expected if you regularly perform them more consistently.
