DIY: Yakisugi "Shou Sugi Ban" Wood Burning by the Traditional Japanese Flue Method

Nakamoto Forestry North America demonstrates making yakisugi "shou sugi ban" using the traditional Japanese "Flue Method", which has been used for centuries to quickly and efficiently heat-treat sugi wood planks. While other DIY methods use torches or weed burners to burn the wood, this is the best technique to produce the highest quality finish for exterior siding. This charred exterior further protects the cladding from fire, weather, and pests.

Wood used: Japanese Cypress (Cryptomeria japanica) commonly referred to in Japanese as "Sugi" (yaki=charred, sugi=cypress)
