One day visiting Nijmegen | Walking tour to the bridge

Описание к видео One day visiting Nijmegen | Walking tour to the bridge

On my third day in the Netherlands, I travel to Nijmegen in the Netherlands, another city which featured in Operation Market Garden, in September 1944. This was the Allied invasion of Holland, in order to capture various bridges over the river from Eindhoven to Arnhem. Arnhem Bridge was the prize and a bridge that proved to be a bridge too far. This story was told in the 1977 film entitled, A Bridge too Far.

In this video, I take you on a walking tour of Nijmegen, starting with the children’s zoo inside Kronenburgerpark, founded in 1876. Some of the remains of the old city wall can be seen along with the large powder tower. The lake is quite splendid, as are the gardens themselves. Next was Stevenskirk or Stevens church, a beautiful building rebuilt after the Second World War. I stopped for a coffee in a superb café overlooking the Waal River, which offered views of the bridge and the ships on the river.

One of the main museums in Nijmegen is the De Basti Museum, built on the site of a former castle, where some fragments of the castle wall can still be seen inside the museum. Opposite is a huge wall mural to Theophanu, who died in 997 and whom Saint Nicholas chapel is dedicated. Saint Nicholas chapel built over a thousand years ago, is located in the grounds of the Valkhof, the former castle complex, now a popular park. I also discovered part of the castle’s great hall, now a ruin. Finally I walk down to the Wall River and the Nijmegen bridge where some of the sequences from the film ‘A Bridge too Far’ were filmed, which were based on events from Operation Market Garden during the Second World War.
