AEW is Broken, and it needs more than just a new set design in 2024. They’ve tried that with Dynamite twice in a few short years, and new colors won’t lead to bigger ratings. AEW is down bad, and they continue to make the same mistakes that lead to the same underwhelming results. Some of which could cool off their product for good. I don’t think AEW will die anytime soon, but its fate could be even worse as the living dead, and a company that just…exists. Like TNA after 2010, or ROH during the Sinclair years. Or ROH now, wiith billionaires pumping cash into a Dave Meltzer Vanity project that nobody cares about, like a wrestling promotion hooked up to a ventilator machine.

There are at least five ways AEW can fix its problems during lean times, and at least one of them could change its troubled identity in ways few could have ever imagined. I’ve been studying, praising and criticizing AEW since the beginning, and here’s how they can get up off the mat, and turn things around for good.

First of all, AEW needs to stop listening to Dave Meltzer. God love David, but he’s in his Joe Biden Bag these days. Confusing names, having to edit out large portions of the Observer for making sh!t up. His WrestleMania coverage often comes off as guesswork, and the more Tony Khan listens to him, the smaller AEW’s target audience gets.

Meltzer incentivizes wrestlers to wrestle and wrestle and wrestle for the sport of wrestling through his bullsh!t five-star ratings. He obsesses over the boring and technical details of professional wrestling. AEW had maybe two good years of quality pro wrestling, but it’s struggled mightily since 2022. Still, AEW has had 27 five-star matches in its five years of existence. WWE has had 18 five star ratings in 71 years. That’s 2.5 five-star matches every 10-year average and that’s so LAAAME! It should also tell you the correlation between drawing money and imaginary stars.

Plus, some of the greatest wrestlers in history have somehow evaded the mythical five-star match. They’re only preserved and solicited to the wrestlers who work the way Dave thinks they should. Chances are, the styles Meltzer rewards are the most dangerous styles that lead wrestlers to a career of injuries, limited storylines and no money. Yes, that Ricky Starks and Bryan Danielson strap match was incredible, They beat the sh°t out of each other. Now tell me the story. Right now, tell me how this was an epic conclusion that demanded that two grown men beat the hell out of each other with belts. Why did this match happen? Who was the main character? Who was the babyface? Who was the heel? What were they fighting for?

You can’t do it. I’ll bet you can’t even tell me when or where it happened. In the grand scheme of things, it will be remembered as a great technical wrestling match for empty five-star calories. Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi are both recovering from very serious injuries and are out indefinitely, get well soon. Bryan Danielson is working with half his vision and a busted arm. Between the three of them, they have 47 five-star matches. Tony Khan’s entire roster will go down this same path if he keeps listening to Meltzer, but hey, at least they’ll have millions of dollars worth of five-star matches. Whatever that means. Hopefully, for Tony’s sake, star ratings are a form of currency in Jacksonville, or Japan.
