Batman Unchained, also often referred to as Batman Triumphant was a proposed sequel to the film Batman and Robin. The was to be directed by Joel Schumacher and had a script written by Mark Protosevich.

"It would have been very dark", Schumacher recalls, and the film would apparently have focused on George Clooney's Batman 'learning to conquer fear and to confront the demons of his past'.


There would be two main villains in the film: the Scarecrow and Harley Quinn.

The Scarecrow would be a twisted psychologist who conducts fear experiments on people in Arkham Asylum. He would have some form of vendetta against Bruce Wayne and would plan to use his new fear gas to drive Bruce insane and lock him up in Arkham Ayslum.

Schumacher wanted Nicholas Cage for the role and even interviewed him for the part on the set of Face/Off.

Harley Quinn was heavily re-imagined for the film, being re-written as the doll-maker who discovers she was actually the daughter of the late Joker. Quinn would attempt to avenge her father by destroying Batman. Protosevich describes this version of Quinn as: "sadistic in a mischievous, fun sense". Proposed casting for Harley Quinn included the singer Madonna.

Other villains from previous Batman films were also expected to make cameos in the film in the form of hallucinations.


Recurring actors for the film would have included George Clooney as Batman, Chris O'Donnel as Robin, and Michael Gough as Alfred.
