Basics of Venous Cannulation for Cardio Pulmonary Bypass: Part 1

Facilitation of venous return from the patient to the bypass machine may be accomplished via a host of cannula options, as well as cannulation sites and within the extracorporeal circuit, blood flows from a higher pressured area to a lower pressured area. With the venous limb of the CPB circuit, gravity is used to siphon blood away from the patient to the machine and at times vaccum or a roller pump can be used to assist venous drainage. This series evaluates the various techniques to achieve venous drainage without causing much hemodynamic changes and the principles of doing the same.
