Popularly known as Deshbandhu for his philanthropic activity. A lawyer by profession, Chittaranjan is credited for successfully defending Aurobindo Ghosh when the latter was charged under a criminal case by the British. He was great leader in Bengal during non-cooperation movement. On the failure of Gandhi's noncooperation movement he founded Swaraj Party. The Swarajya party gained tremendous success in Bengal and the central provinces and won majority seats in the legislative councils (1924) and Das became the first elected mayor of Calcutta.
