Hiking, Fishing & Camping at Page Springs and the Alvord Desert in 4K | Steens Mountain, Oregon

We start the day fly fishing the Donner und Blitzen River at Page Springs Campground for Redband Trout which are a subspecies of the Rainbow Trout. After a successful morning we hike upstream along the Blitzen River Trail to try our luck. While there were many strikes no fish were landed. Once back at Page Springs we hike the short Wilderness Nature Trail which takes you to a plateau overlooking the campground and further. With activities wrapped up we head to Fields Station for some burgers, milkshakes and beer before heading out on to the playa. On the Alvord playa the sun is beating and the wind is whipping so we relax in the tent until sunset. After the sunsets the full moon rises on July 4th. To cap off the trip we make hot chocolate in the morning chill and enjoy the sunrise lighting up the eastern flank of Steens Mountain.

THIS HIKE
There are two hikes in this episode: The Donner und Blitzen River Trail and the Wilderness Nature Trail.

The Donner und Blitzen River Trail is very flat, gaining only 350 ft. as it follows the river upstream for 1.8 miles from Page Springs campground. There is an abundance of riparian vegetation and wildlife. This is also excellent fly fishing water so you'll likely see many fisherman on your hike.

The Wilderness Nature Trail is a short and easy 1.1 mile hike that get's you on the plateau above Page Springs Campground. Gaining only 275 ft. it is also an easy hike. This trail is much less popular so you may have it to yourself as I did. The trail does go through some rocky areas so be sure to keep your eyes and ears out for rattlesnakes.
