She arrived in Hollywood not so much as a woman, but as an event. A living, breathing exclamation mark in heels. Zsa Zsa Gabor didn’t just walk into a room—she entered like a rumour you couldn’t quite believe. Born amid the crumbling opulence of post-imperial Europe, she glided into postwar America with a voice like syrup over crystal and a face sculpted for scandal. Where others begged for a foot in the door, Zsa Zsa kicked it open, smiled, and made herself comfortable.
She had no blockbuster movie, no number one hit, and no literary masterpiece. But she had something far more intoxicating—attention. And she understood, long before the world caught on, that in the new Hollywood, being noticed was more powerful than being talented. Fame was a game. Zsa Zsa was its undefeated champion.
She was married nine times and divorced seven. One husband she left because, as she quipped, “He wanted to have sex in the morning, and I never like to be rude to my guests.” With another, she claimed she divorced him simply because he bored her before the dessert course arrived. But behind the champagne one-liners and camera-ready antics was a story as sharp as a diamond’s edge.
At 17, she scandalised her family by eloping with a Turkish diplomat 20 years her senior. The marriage fizzled, but Zsa Zsa had tasted power—and she was hooked. WWII pushed her out of Europe and into America, where reinvention wasn’t just possible—it was profitable. Weeks after arriving, she was dining with movie stars. Months later, she was engaged to hotel magnate Conrad Hilton. Hilton was old money. Zsa Zsa saw him as both saviour and stepping stone. But what started as a fairy tale soured into gothic horror. “He was cold,” she later said. “He looked at me like a business acquisition.” She alleged he forbade her from socialising and monitored her phone calls. Most tragically, she later claimed their daughter Francesca was conceived through marital rape—an accusation muffled beneath decades of cocktail chatter. But that pain left a mark: on her defiance, her obsession with control, and her refusal to be owned by any man again.
After Hilton, Zsa Zsa collected husbands like accessories. There was George Sanders—witty, jaded, and just vain enough to keep up with her. She called him “too perfect to last.” Her shortest marriage, to Felipe de Alba, lasted one day. “Darling,” she’d say, “I’m a very good housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house.” But her true love wasn’t a man. It was the spotlight.
