Moms CAN Teach Their Dyslexic/ADHD Child to READ

You don't have to be a teacher to be a great teacher! Moms can teach children that have dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, visual processing challenges, ADHD, and ASD to read.

The idea prevails that you must have a teaching degree, advanced degree, specialized and intense instruction, years of experience and training to teach a child with a learning challenge to read. It's not true. What you do need is love, passion, a strong commitment, and fifteen minutes a day, everyday (or as close to it as you can come.)

I stayed back in third grade because I could not read and I could not read the second time through. I was in the remedial program at school, was part of a pull out program, had an IEP and could only read a few words. My mom took me to private "experts" and multiple evaluations. Then she decided to take over - I hope you enjoy the story.

If the school is not teaching your child to read, after multiple meetings, requests, placement adjustments, advocacy, emails, and calls, you have to - it's that simple.

According to the most recent national study in 2022, only 32% of fourth-grade students in the United States performed at or above the NAEP proficient level in reading. We are simply not doing a good job teaching children to read in our nation's schools. If it's not happening at school, then it needs to happen at home.

If we are failing the general population then we are especially failing children with dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, ADHD, and ASD. The number and studies are too varied to list here.

Don't accept that your child is destined to read below grade level or struggle with reading comprehension. You can get them where they need to be.
