Such a great supportive bassline in this song!

I really love the way George Ford plays melodic in the Verses. In the first 5 bars he plays melodic lines and plays the root notes on the G chord (bars 10-12). And what I think is one of the most important things that determines a professional bassline from a ‘regular’ bassline is that George makes beautiful variations in these melodic lines.

Listen/look for instance at bars 5-9; bars 13-17; bars 36-40; bars 85-89 and bars 93-97 and compare them. You’ll notice that mostly George Ford plays the melodic lines on the same chords just a little bit different. I think that this is hardly heard by most listeners, but these kind of basslines keep the song interesting and prevents it from getting bored, but don’t ask too much attention because the bassline got to stay supportive for the song as total and for the vocals.

Have fun!

I play this song on a Fender Jazzbass (USA) with roundwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression and a pre-amp.

Bass: George Ford
Album: The best years of our lives (1975)
