The Wasgamuwa National Park, rich in bio-diversity lies within the Polonnaruwa and Matale Districts.

The name of the park is supposed to be derived from the name “walas gama” meaning ‘bear country’.

There is historical evidence to prove that this area had been inhabited by man during the ancient Sinhala kingdoms in BC.

Yet, we rarely come across evidence to prove these claims.

But, we at News 1st have managed to locate a plethora of ancient ruins within the Wasgamuwa Jungle that bears testament to the ancient civilizations of Sri Lanka.

One of the key highlights was the discovery of ancient carvings preserved over the sands of time as no proper excavation had taken place inside the thick forest.
