48회. [효담스님-간화선5대선사대법회] 인간의 본성인 청정한 마음을 찾아서

오늘 보문사 보문선원에서는 합천의 전 해인사 선원장으로 계션던 효담스님께서 친히 찾아주시어 우리불자들에게 법문을 진행하여주셨다. 효담스님이 오늘 불자들에게 전하여주시고자하는 말씀은 인간의 본성을 찾아 회복하는 것이다.

1) 인간의 본성
효담스님은 인간의 본성을 찾고 회복해야한다고 하셨다. 인간의 본성은 여러가지 단어로 달리 표현될 수 있으나, 이를 회복하고 찾는 다는 것은 청정한 마음을 찾는 것이라고 하셨다. 우리가 가지고 있는 본래의 청정한 마음은 구름에 가려져 보이지 않아 그 존재를 잠시 잊었을 뿐이지 수행을 통하여 찾을 수 있는 것이라고 하시는 효담스님은 불자들에게 어떠한 이야기를 전해주고 싶으셨던 것일까?

2) 자아의식
과학자가 이야기 하는 자아의식은 우리의 몸안의 뉴런이라는 작은 단계까지 내려가며 그 의미를 파헤친다. 그러나 효담스님은 이 자아가 몸안에 있는 것이 아니라고 말씀하시는데, 도대체 의식이 밖에 있다는 말씀은 무슨 말씀이실까? 효담스님께서 말씀하시려고하는 자아의 의미는 어떤 의미일까?

3) 인간의 번뇌
효담스님은 인간의 번뇌를 진흙에 찍는 도장에 비유하셨다. 진흙에 찍는 도장, 물에찍는 도장, 허공에 찍는 도장. 허공에는 도장이 찍히기는 하는 것인가? 허공에 도장을 찍을 수 있는 사람이 되어야한다고 말씀하시는 효담스님의 뜻은 무엇일까?

■ 48. Finding the Pure Mind, the True Nature of Humanity ■

Today, at Bomunsa Bomun Seonwon, Zen Master Hyodam, who previously served as the head of Haeinsa Seonwon in Hapcheon, personally visited and delivered a Dharma talk to our Buddhists. Zen Master Hyodam's message for today is about finding and recovering the true nature of humanity.

1) The True Nature of Humanity
Zen Master Hyodam emphasized the need to find and recover our true nature. This true nature can be expressed in various ways, but recovering and finding it is essentially about discovering the pure mind. Although our original pure mind might seem obscured by clouds, making it temporarily forgotten, Zen Master Hyodam suggests that it can be rediscovered through practice. What message was Zen Master Hyodam trying to convey to Buddhists regarding this pure mind?

2) Self-Consciousness
Scientists delve into self-consciousness down to the level of neurons within the body. However, Zen Master Hyodam asserts that this self is not confined within the body. What does it mean that consciousness is said to be outside the body? What is the significance of self that Zen Master Hyodam is referring to?

3) Human Afflictions
Zen Master Hyodam compared human afflictions to a stamp imprinted in mud. There are stamps imprinted in mud, in water, and in empty space. Can a stamp be imprinted in empty space? What does Zen Master Hyodam mean by suggesting that one should become someone capable of stamping in empty space?
