The Gion Festival is the grandest festival in Kyoto, held at Yasaka Shrine. It lasts for a month, from July 1st (Yoshifuiri) to July 31st (Ekijinja Natsuoshi Matsuri). During the festival, various rituals and events take place, including the spectacular Yamaboko processions on July 17th (Saki-Matsuri) and July 24th (Ato-Matsuri). These massive floats, adorned with beautiful tapestries and textiles, weigh up to 12 tons and reach heights of 25 meters. Additionally, the festival features the Shinkōsai (divine procession) and Kankōsai (return procession), where around 1,600 participants carry portable shrines (mikoshi) through the streets to welcome and honor the deity.
