The ‘secret’ of the bassline from John McVie in the main riff (for instance bar 1 and 2) is in my opinion the staccato note of the eight note of the second and fourth count. He plays this staccato eight note ‘towards’ the note on the third count in the bar and the first count of the next bar. The staccato (short) notes are marked with a dot in the transcription.

And ofcourse the rests on the second en fourth count of the bar are also essential. The notes on the first and third count must not be played as a 1,5 count but it is just one count with a rest on the second and fourth count of the bar.

John sticks to the maingroove all the time and just makes a little variation where he supports the melody of the singer. Sometimes he ‘answers’ the singer when Nickie has a rest. Most of the time he does this together with the drums of Mick Fleetwood.

The repetitive character of the groove makes this song sound great. His bassline doesn’t distract and it does what it supposes to do: make the song groove and make it recognizable.

I play this song on a Sire Marcus Miller V10 2nd generation.

Bassplayer: John McVie
