Most people know that exercise is good for your physical and mental health. But did you know that regular exercise can be just as effective at treating some forms of depression as anti-depressant medications and psychological treatment for depression? Research has shown that regular exercise can have a powerful effect on preventing the development of depression, helping a person come out of depression and preventing future depressive episodes. So the question is, how does regular exercise have this effect on depression?

There are a number of ways in which regular exercise can prevent depression and help a person recover from depression:
1) Regular exercise can help reduce the impact of stress.
2) Exercise can increase the amount of energy you have.
3) Some forms of exercise can have mood-enhancement effects, commonly referred to as the “runner’s high”.
4) The process of getting exercise forces you to be more active in general.
5) Exercise is a sign that you are taking steps to feel better and there are things that you can do to feel better.
6) Regular exercise can make you more efficient in your daily tasks.
7) Regular exercise can help improve your sleep.

So exercise can be a powerful antidepressant. Some tips for how to start building regular exercise into your life:
1) Start with small exercise goals and build slowly.
2) Frequency of exercise ins more important and duration or intensity.
3) Focus on forms of physical exercise that you might enjoy doing.
4) Have some variety in the forms of exercise that you are getting.
