Did you know - birth defects of the penis are so common, they are second only to congenital heart disease? Of these, hypospadias is the most common, whereby the urine opening is below the normal location at the tip of the head of the penis. This occurs in 1 of every 200 newborn boys - that’s 1 born every 90 seconds (!) - more than Down’s syndrome or cleft disorders. They are not only common, but treatable conditions - yet are rarely mentioned in the media, leaving those who are coping with them feeling alone and unsupported.

Operation Happenis is a charity organization founded by pediatric urologists Drs. Snodgrass, Bush, and Caldamone seeking to raise awareness, improve care, promote research, and provide support to those dealing with hypospadias and other penile birth defects.
When Dr. Bush shared her meaningful work/charity with me and asked us to do a playdough case for her patients and charity, we dove in. His final verdict: “not yucky at all!” 😅 I think the playdough worked well for illustrating the concepts and the intricacy to the repair - if you can pretend our coarse finger pinching is actually very delicate suturing 😂 this was one of his favorite surgeries to do!
