Описание к видео Trains at London Marylebone (CML) - 29/10/2024

The 251st video of my train spotting adventures.
-----
This video takes us down the CML from West Ruislip, right into the midst of London and the Paddington-Liverpool Street arc of terminus stations, this one being London Marylebone railway station. A mid-sized, 6-platform DfT Category A "National hub" train and Underground station, it was opened back in 1899 as the London terminus of the Great Central Main Line (GCML), the last major railway to open in Britain for 100 years (until the opening of High Speed 1/HS1). Marylebone was the last of London's main line termini to be built and is one of the smallest, opening with half of the platforms originally planned.
-
The GCML was built as part of the Great Central Railway (GCR) company's London Extension to their North of England lines between Manchester and Nottingham, and was built to allow as fast as possible line speeds, and wasn't intended to duplicate the Midland Main Line or the West Coast Main Line in terms of populous destinations served, and the line became far more utilised for coal traffic than passengers for its entire existence. It was built from the old Nottingham Victoria station, passing through Leicester (Leicester Central), Rugby (Rugby Central), and then down through Buckinghamshire towards Aylesbury, Amersham and into London, alongside the Metropolitan Railway's commuter/regional route out of Baker Street. An "alternative route" was constructed in 1906, joint with the Great Western Railway (GWR), to add a link from Ashendon Junction near Haddenham & Thame, via Princes Risborough, High Wycombe and South Ruislip, before re-joining the main GCML route into Marylebone.
-
Traffic declined at Marylebone station from the mid-20th century, particularly after the GCML closed north of Aylesbury in the 1960s, as the Beeching Report deemed it too much a clone of the Midland Main Line. By the 1980s, it was threatened with closure, but was reprieved (press announcement on 30 April 1986) because of commuter traffic on the London to Aylesbury Line (a remaining part of the GCML) and from High Wycombe along the remains of the GCR/GWR joint line. In 1993, the station found a new role as the terminus of the Chiltern Main Line, which was a newly dubbed secondary main line incorporating a number of old lines, including the GCR/GWR joint line, the GWR's Bicester Cut-off line from Princes Risborough through Bicester to Banbury, and the lines from Banbury to Birmingham Snow Hill.
-
Following the privatisation of British Rail, the station was expanded with two additional platforms in 2006 and improved services to Birmingham Snow Hill. In 2015, services began between Marylebone and Oxford Parkway, via a new chord connecting the main line to the Oxford to Bicester Line and an extension to Oxford following in 2016. As of 2020, it is the only main London terminus to host only diesel trains, as none of the National Rail lines into it are electrified. A connection back in 1907 to the Bakerloo Line still exists today; other Underground lines can be reached via Baker Street only 500-600 metres away.
-
The history of Marylebone is too big to fit into this description, so I advise checking it out via Wikipedia or otherwise!
