I’ve heard many patients tell me that they have OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, only to find out that they have obsessive compulsive personality traits. For example, being particular about how your work station is organized, or being careful about how your car is running or how clean your hands are, does not mean that you have OCD. There’s a difference. There’s a difference in the disability that OCD causes.

Patients with bonafide OCD have difficulty functioning day-to-day, because they cannot get rid of obsessive thoughts. These obsessive thoughts lead to compulsive behaviors, such as repetitive handwashing.

Fortunately, there are therapies that are available to reduce the anxiety associated with obsessive thoughts and also cognitive behavioral therapies that can lead to reduction in compulsive behaviors. Cannabis can do both. We’ve had many patients with obsessive compulsive disorder as well as personality traits associated with anxiety that use cannabis to reduce those intrusive thoughts and allow these patients to function day-to-day.

So if you have patients with OCD, and are interested in using cannabis therapy to help reduce these unwanted effects, please reach us at the Neurology of Cannabis Clinic.
